To help bring more resilient infrastructure to the Sunshine State, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Friday that more than $150 million is being awarded to Florida communities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them is a project in Lakeland that is getting the “big enchilada” of the funding with $42.9 million awarded for a multi-component project in partnership with awarded for a multi-component project in partnership with Bonnet Springs Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the governor, the funding is part of long-term infrastructure money after storms like Hurricane Irma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to have a steady stream of money to be able to deal with resiliency and different infrastructure needs,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonnet Springs Park<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The City of Lakeland in partnership with Bonnet Springs Park applied for the funding to be a part of a larger $110 million publicly and privately funded effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project will provide social benefits to a community that sits in a county with one of the nation\u2019s highest suburban poverty rates, according to the governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He says the project will focus on mitigation efforts, add flood storage capacity to the drainage base and make improvements to storm water infrastructure and watershed resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe think that this mitigation\u2019s important. It\u2019s important for safety\/security, it\u2019s important for food\/water shelter, transportation, also combatting hazardous materials,” DeSantis said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project will include:  The project will be initiated over the next several months and the overall project is expected to be completed over a 10-year period.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
