Gospel Inc. officially cut the ribbon on 48 new permanent supportive housing apartments at Gospel Village, marking the largest expansion in the organization’s history. Located in East Lakeland near the intersection of Main Street and North Lake Parker Avenue, the brand-new, two-story buildings welcomed their very first residents.

For many moving into the units, this represents the first real, stable home they have had in over a decade.
Inside the New Units
The expansion is specifically designed to provide high-quality, dignified living spaces that offer a stark contrast to life on the streets or in temporary shelters:
- The Layout: Two newly constructed two-story buildings housing 48 fully furnished, one-bedroom apartments. Each unit is roughly 400 to 550 square feet.
- Modern Amenities: Inside, the apartments feature granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and white shaker cabinets.
- Accessibility: To ensure a lifetime of stable housing for older adults or those with physical challenges, the bathrooms are fully ADA-compliant, featuring roll-in showers, grab bars, fold-down benches, and handheld showerheads.
- Affordability: Forty of the apartments are reserved for individuals making at most 30% of the area’s median income (roughly $18,300 a year). Residents typically pay 40% of their income toward rent. If they lack government benefits or traditional employment, they can participate in on-site work opportunities to cover their housing costs.

More Than Just a Roof: The Community Model
What sets Gospel Village apart from traditional housing projects is its holistic “micro-enterprise” campus model, which pairs permanent housing with wraparound wellness services, community, and purposeful work:
- The Repurpose Studio & Sewing Room: Provides residents—particularly women—the opportunity to learn crafting skills and create handmade goods, earning a dignified income when items are sold at local markets.
- On-Site Agriculture: The campus features a fresh produce garden and an egg-producing chicken coop, which provide both therapy and supplemental food resources.
- Support & Wellness: Through partnerships with healthcare networks like BayCare, residents have access to on-site certified peer recovery specialists, mental health experts, and case managers to navigate past traumas.
- Shared Spaces: Community dinners, gatherings under the campus’s sprawling oak trees, and a shared pantry help eliminate the isolation that frequently impacts individuals transitioning out of chronic homelessness.
Community and Funding Partnerships
The rapid completion of phase one was pushed forward by substantial local backing. The City of Lakeland signed off on an approximate $685,000 deferred loan utilizing federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Under the agreement, the loan will be completely forgiven if Gospel Inc. maintains the units as affordable housing for at least 20 years.
With this expansion, Gospel Village has increased its capacity to roughly 80 permanent homes, taking a significant step toward its ultimate long-term goal of building out a 150-unit footprint to address chronic homelessness across Polk County.
