Louella Phillips says the water in her hometown of Mulberry was contaminated from phosphate mining in the area. She calls her neighborhood a “cancer cluster” because of the high rates of cancer and other health conditions that she says are a direct result. Phillips travels to Lake City to get water in reusable jugs from a Home Depot faucet when she has the gas to drive there. Otherwise, all she can do is worry about her boyfriend’s children’s safety and pray that they don’t test positive for cancer. They’re already complaining of aching bones and get sick frequently. This is her story of survival in a mining culture community.
