After helping lead Florida Southern College men’s basketball to a pair of wins last week, Jalyn Hinton has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on Monday. Hinton averaged 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game for as the No. 11 Moccasins took down Eckerd (92-84) and Palm Beach Atlantic (81-79) last week to pull into a three-way tie for first place in the SSC.
In last Wednesday’s win over Eckerd, Hinton scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Mocs past the Tritons. He also went 9-of-10 from the floor in the victory. Against Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, Hinton stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists, six blocks, and a steal. He was 5-of-6 from the floor against the Sailfish to finish the week with a combined field-goal percentage of 87.5 percent (14-of-16).
Hinton has now recorded at least three blocks in 11 different games this season and leads all of Division II in blocks per game (3.86) while ranking second in total blocks (54) despite playing three fewer games than the national leader in blocks, Azusa Pacific’s Selom Maqugbe (55 blocks). Hinton was previously named as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 9, and this week’s selection marks the fourth time this season the Mocs have captured a weekly men’s basketball honor. Brett Hanson has earned two SSC Player of the Week awards, and both Hanson and Hinton were named to the Top 100 Watch List for the Bevo Francis Award last week.
Hinton and the Mocs return to action on Wednesday at home against Tampa, before hosting No. 19 Barry on Saturday.
