Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd is facing COVID-19 at work and at home.
He said that nearly 50 of his deputies currently have COVID-19 and at least four of them are hospitalized.
“This COVID is running like a raging wildfire,” Judd said. “The overwhelming majority of everyone in the community in the hospital doesn’t have the shot. It’s just terrible.”
Judd said he and his wife, Marisa, were vaccinated “the moment I was eligible. And I got Moderna. Marisa and me. And I highly recommend every adult getting the vaccination. And I have sent out those notices encouraging all the members of the sheriff’s office.”
But Judd, the most well-known Republican in Polk County, said he will not mandate the shot or masks for his employees.
“It’s a personal decision for them whether they get it or not, but I highly recommend they do,” Judd said. “I have not and I will not mandate it. It has to be a personal decision, but people are dying from COVID. This is a real and serious virus. I truly believe that the vaccine is a life-saver from the virus.”
During the morning phone call, Judd said three of his 13 grandchildren were at the doctor getting tested for COVID, adding that four of them have already had the virus.
