Lakeland’s newest mural along South Florida Avenue

The newest mural along South Florida Avenue was completed over the weekend by artist Charly Malpass on the Hunter Street side of Dixieland Village.

According to Malpass, she used recycled paint and told her Instagram followers: “This is by far the biggest wall I’ve ever painted”

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute, Malpass traveled around Greece and Italy studying ancient works of art and classic painting techniques. She has many artistic outputs, including large scale murals, oil paintings on canvas, and hand written poetry. This gives her the ability to create a unique and diverse body of work.

On canvas, her process begins by writing a poem then allowing her words to come to life through each painting. Building layers of transparent glazes and opaque highlights, she is able to create realistic impressions which exhibit a strong sense of passion and history, while her soft brush strokes and deep color palette give each piece an ethereal quality.  Malpass enjoys exploring her feelings with imagery to recreate the raw beauty of nature; whether it be light glimmering on the water or the moon rising in the night’s sky.

Her murals feature lush canopies and vibrant flowers in a bold and expressive style. She is currently collaborating with Encore Paint, a company that collects material from hazardous waste centers turning old, discarded paint into new, usable paint for artists. Sustainability has been a major theme in her recent projects. She able to make a difference and help our planet by creating works of art from previously wasted matter.
