Days before his second-degree murder trial was set to begin, former Lakeland City Commissioner Michael Dunn pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a firearm in a deal with prosecutors that avoids a mandatory minimum sentence.
The conviction for manslaughter with a firearm can bring up to 30 years in prison, but the judge would have the discretion to impose less. In this plea agreement, the defense asked for a sentence no longer than 10 years, while prosecutors will seek up to 17.5 years.
Sentencing will take place on May 23. Dunn will remain free on bond until that time and during the evidentiary hearing under the same release conditions, he’s been under since his case began.
