The parents of a girl who died in 2020 while a student at a Lakeland “restoration home” have filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the facility’s former directors and Teen Challenge of Florida, which operated it.
Lawyers for Albert and Deborah Wood, the parents of Naomi Wood, filed the lawsuit last week with the 10th Judicial Circuit Court in Bartow. The Woods requested a jury trial and are seeking damages of more than $30,000.
Naomi Wood, 17, died on May 19, 2020, after months of complaining about persistent abdominal pains while a resident at Lakeland Girls Academy, according to a report from the Florida Department of Children and Families. A medical examiner ruled that Wood died of a seizure disorder.
