Dedicated, Heartbroken Marine and Family Ask for Help to Fulfill Son’s Final Wish: Going to The Moon
United States Marine Scott Gallagher and his family suffered a tragic loss in May 2022 when his 11-year-old son, Matthew Liam Gallagher, passed away unexpectedly. Matthew was a bright young boy whose biggest dreams were to become an astronaut and pilot. He had an unwavering love of space, aviation, and technology. He could tell you everything about the Moon’s different phases and point out the different planets in the night sky, and many constellations. He dreamed of becoming one of the pilots for the Blue Angels or the Thunderbirds. He was thoroughly obsessed with Warbirds. He could point them all out at air shows and give you a rundown of what each one was used for, and which platform replaced them as time passed. Matthew also was obsessed with everything Tesla and SpaceX.
To honor Matthew and his memory, his family has created a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising enough money to fulfill his dream of going to the Moon. They will do this with the help of Houston-based Company Celestis, Inc., the pioneer and iconic global leader in memorial spaceflight services. The Gallagher family seeks to fulfill Matthew’s wish of going to space and launching his cremated remains on one of Celestis’ upcoming Luna missions, the Destiny Flight.

Destiny, Celestis’ third such flight and 26th overall mission, will be launching out of Cape Canaveral, Florida, in 2023. The Destiny Flight will carry a symbolic portion of the cremated remains or DNA of each flight participant. Matthew, along with others, will be buried on the surface of the Moon and will, in turn, join American geologist and scientist Dr. Eugene Shoemaker, who is currently the only person buried on the Moon. Through Celestis’ Destiny Flight, Matthew will join the others on board in becoming some of the first humans ever to be buried on the moon.
