The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate died at the hospital Friday.
Eric Nelson, 46, is accused of attacking deputies at the South County Jail before he was taken to the hospital.
Nelson had been taken into custody Friday morning.
The Lakeland Police Department responded to the report of a man fleeing from a Taco Bell located on U.S. Highway 98 after a possible burglary.
Nelson was found in the parking lot of a Starbucks.
In his backpack, police said they found a bag containing a substance determined to be methamphetamine and syringes.
He was arrested on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
