In 1889, E.B. Briggs began construction on Lakeland’s first power plant, located at the corner of Cedar and Massachusetts. Three years later, Plant Manager Harry C Sloan flipped the switch that lit up Lakeland for the first time, making it the third town in Florida to have electricity. With a population of only 550 people, it was a momentous occasion! On August 8, 1904, Lakeland’s City Council voted 5-2 to purchase the power plant for $7,500, making it a part of our town’s history forever. Serving Lakeland for 119 years and counting.
