As we grapple with the obesity epidemic, a recent review in Foods illuminates a promising path forward: harnessing plant-based phytonutrients. Intervention with bioactive compounds from plants shows promise in treating obesity by avoiding side effects from anti-obesity drugs. So, for Animal Welfare Week (October 3-9), let’s embrace the power of plants for animals, the planet, and human health: Let’s go vegan.
Animals raised for food endure unimaginable suffering in factory farms, confined to cramped spaces, and subjected to cruel practices like dehorning and debeaking. The meat industry strives to maximize output while minimizing costs—always at the animals’ expense. These sentient beings deserve our protection, and our planet does, too.
Animal agriculture accounts for approximately 15% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. It occupies nearly 70% of agricultural land, making it a primary driver of deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of water resources.
Instead of perpetuating the cycle of harm, we can choose healthier, compassionate, and sustainable vegan foods. Going vegan has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.
As we observe Animal Welfare Week and reflect on the profound impact of our choices, let’s unite in embracing the power of plants for the well-being of animals, the preservation of our planet, and the promotion of human health.
Together, we have the power to change the world for the better.
