Amidst the jubilant fun of Halloween festivities, tragedy struck Tampa’s Ybor City early Sunday morning. A dispute between two groups rapidly escalated into a fatal confrontation that left two dead and 18 injured.
Unfathomable Chaos on a Celebratory Night
Just shy of 3 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of East 7th Avenue, responding to reports of an active shooter. The vicinity, well-known for its bars and clubs, was teeming with revelers—many in festive Halloween garb.
Witnesses on the scene have described a shocking and harrowing scene. A video circulating online captures the night’s merriment interrupted by a succession of shots, followed by eight more, prompting immediate panic. The chilling footage displays patrons, many adorned in Halloween costumes, scrambling for safety—some even using metal tables as makeshift shields. As the dust settles, law enforcement can be seen attending to multiple victims strewn across the pavement.
“It was a disturbance or a fight between two groups. And in this fight between two groups we had hundreds of innocent people involved that were in the way,” remarked Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw in an impromptu press conference.
Suspects and Ongoing Investigation
Chief Bercaw confirmed that one suspect has since turned themselves in, but at least one other individual involved in the shooting remains at large. Despite one shooter in custody, the motives behind the tragic incident remain unclear.
