Lakeland Voter turnout was light with only 15.1% of the city’s 62,582 voters casting ballots — 3,609 on Tuesday, 219 during early walk-in voting, and 5,626 by mail. Note early walk-in result information is combined into the mail ballot result totals for city elections which is 5,845.
There are 4 provisional ballots that the Lakeland Canvassing Board will review when they meet next week.
Other media outlets have reported these numbers incorrectly.
Mail ballots requested = 10,299 mailed out 5626 returned, but 4673 were not returned and wasted over $3000 in postage.
Two candidates are vying for the seat on the City Commission representing Northwest Lakeland in the Dec. 5 runoff election. All registered voters throughout Lakeland can vote in this election.
During the Nov. 7 city election, Guy LaLonde Jr. captured 47.8% of the citywide vote, and Samuel Simmons came in second at 30.9%. A third candidate, Lolita Berrien, received 21.1%.
City commission races are non-partisan. Commissioners’ pay for 2023-24 is $32,639 with an expense allowance of $1,800.
