The warnings related to rodent or insect activity in Lakeland Restaurants

The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation notes that a restaurant inspection is just “a snapshot of conditions present at the time of the inspection.” It warns that inspections are not necessarily indicative of long-term or persistent conditions at a restaurant. In other words, some days are better or worse than others.

No Polk restaurant had rodent or insect activity bad enough to close down. However, these four had various levels of activity that required follow-up inspections.

  • Hibachi Buffet, 901 Memorial Blvd., Lakeland, received 12 violations, including two high-priority, on Oct. 2. Among the high-priority violations, an inspector noted 40 live flies in a dry storage area and 12 live flies in a back storage area for single-use items. No food prep was taking place in these areas. The other high-priority violation was for raw chicken and beef not properly separated on the buffet line. The restaurant also received a basic violation for two dead roaches in the back behind the hot water heater. In a follow-up inspection Oct. 3, the inspector still noted eight live flies. The restaurant passed a second follow-up inspection on Oct. 5 with zero violations.
  • Papa John’s Pizza, 1853 E. Memorial Blvd. #117, Lakeland, received five violations on Oct. 10, including one high-priority. The inspector noted 30 dead flying insects in the restaurant. A manager cleaned and sanitized the areas. A follow-up was required, but as of Friday, no follow-up appeared in state reports.
  • Church’s Chicken #413, 215 W Memorial Blvd., Lakeland, had 10 violations on Oct. 13, including one high priority. That was for a single live roach found near the cookline. A manager killed the roach and sanitized the area. In a follow-up inspection on Oct. 16, the restaurant had no high-priority violations, just two basic and two intermediate. The intermediate violations were related to employee training. A follow-up is still required, but as of Friday, no follow-up had been recorded in state reports.
  • Winner’s Circle Sports Bar and Grill, 4215 S. Florida Ave., Lakeland, had five violations on Oct. 30, one of which was a high priority. An inspector noted four live flies near the beverage sprayer nozzles in the bar area. It also received an intermediate violation for an empty hot sauce container blocking the employee handwash sink. In a follow-up inspection the next day, the restaurant met standards with only two basic violations.
