A motorcyclist was arrested Thursday after troopers said he was clocked at 120 mph before he crashed into a Florida Highway Patrol car.
While conducting speed enforcement on Interstate 4 near mile marker 12, troopers said they clocked a motorcyclist traveling at 117 mph in a 65 mph zone.
A trooper said the motorcycle had no registration tag on it so they activated their emergency lights and siren and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
According to an arrest report, the motorcyclist maintained speed and later took the exit to US 92 and US 301. The motorcyclist slowed on the exit ramp but then sped up to over 100 mph and continued to flee west on US 92.
Shortly after, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office told FHP that their aviation unit saw the incident and was tracking the motorcycle.
The trooper was able to catch up with the motorcyclist within the city of Tampa but the driver fled again.
Around 2:05 a.m., the trooper said the motorcyclist was found traveling east on West Henry Avenue at a slow speed. The trooper said they activated their emergency lights and siren and stopped their patrol car at an angle, thinking the rider would stop.
According to the report, the motorcyclist tried to pass the trooper but ended up striking the front left side of the patrol car’s push bumper and the motorcycle overturned.
The motorcyclist, identified as Ashley McGee, was then taken into custody. He was brought to a hospital and will later be sent to the Hillsborough County Jail when he is medically cleared.
Troopers said McGee’s license was suspended and he had two prior convictions for driving with a suspended license.
