Name of Incident: Village of Lakeland Liftstation Overflow 2024-1583

Incident Description: Operator responded to a call for overflowing manhole on 02/20/2024 at approximately 14:00. Operator found lift station overflowing and sewage flowing across the road to the boat ramp and into Pelican Lake. The main service breaker was tripped and neither pumps would run. Pump #1 was shorted to ground and Pump #2 was found to have a bad contact on L3 of the starter. Operator switched position of the L2 pump wire to the L2 on the starter and Pump #2 began pumping. The spill was stopped at 14:30. The puddled sewage was pumped back into the lift station wet well. We limed the spill area in the grass. The street and boat ramp were disinfected with bleach. The shore line was posted with signs saying “No Swimming or Fishing.” The lake will be sampled for E-Coli for the next few days. Patricia De Rivera, Environmental Specialist with Polk Health Dept came to the site to respond to a complaint made to them on Saturday, Feb 18th and noted the sewage spill. We estimate the overflow rate to be about 4 gallons per minute. 2 days = 48 hours or 2880 minutes. 4 gpm x 2880 min = 11,520 gallons PLEASE NOTE THE WATER BODY AFFECTED IS CALLED PELICAN LAKE. THE REPORTING FUNCTION OF THIS SYSTEM IS REQUIRING ME TO SELECT ANOTHER WATER BODY BUT NEITHER ANGLERS LAKE NOR SADDLE CREEK WERE AFFECTED, ONLY PELICAN LAKE.
