GROWTH MUST PAY FOR GROWTH
The City of Lakeland does collect Fire Impact Fees. Currently, of the $1.7 million that is currently available, $900k is earmarked for the remaining debt service on the Fire Training Center Expansion Project.
The remaining amount will be used towards the land purchase for Station 8. Going forward Fire Impact Fees collected will be used towards debt service for Fire Station 8.
As a side note, the City is required by statute to spend impact fees within 7 years of collection. Given that restriction, the City is not allowed to set aside collections for future expansion beyond 7 years.
Lakeland has spent roughly $900,000 of coronavirus relief funds under the American Rescue Plan Act to purchase a new fire engine for Station 8. It was ordered nearly a year ago, and the city anticipates delivery in the next few months. But by the time Fire Station 8 opens the Fire Engine will be over two years old.
