In the first 4 months of 2024, 1,113 cats were killed at Polk County Animal Control. What a sad statistic that I would hope most taxpayers in the County would be appalled to hear. That’s your tax dollars being used to kill animals.
2081 cats were entered into the shelter listed as “stray”. That means that the public was responsible for bringing in most, if not all, of those cats. Sadly, at least half of them were killed.
Please, if you see cats in your neighborhood, near your school or church, work to get them fixed and then leave them be. Once fixed, many of the annoying behaviors stop. If the cat is ear-tipped, don’t take it in to die at animal control. Animal control will not adopt out an ear-tipped cat, no matter how friendly it is. The ear tip shows that it is fixed and vaccinated. Many ear-tipped cats are owned cats that are inside/outside cats.
Please spread the word with neighbors, coworkers, and friends. Leave the ear-tipped cats alone and work to get the others fixed ASAP. We are diligently trying to fix as many outside cats as possible, but we are only a small group. Money is tight. Surgery spaces are limited. Helpers are few and far between. Do your part, please. I know they aren’t your animals, but as a humane individual, it’s the right thing to do.
