A Polk County deputy was arrested Saturday morning after he showed up for a shift while intoxicated, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Monday.
Joseph Everett, 27, resigned from his position after two years with the sheriff’s office following his DUI arrest.
Everett admitted to drinking three coffee mugs of whiskey the previous night after his supervisor noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, according to PCSO. He was accused of exhibiting signs of impairment while completing a field sobriety test.
“Anytime someone chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol, it shows a lack of good judgment,” Sheriff Grady Judd said in a statement. “If you lack the proper judgment when it comes to drinking and driving, you have no business working in law enforcement. We hold our deputies to a higher standard than the community, and he failed to meet that standard.”
The deputy resigned from the sheriff’s office when he was arrested.
