Polk County Parks and Natural Resources is conducting a 25-acre prescribed burn Thursday at Gator Creek, a conservation tract in North Lakeland.
Gator Creek will be closed to the public and is expected to reopen Friday.
The burn is being conducted for ecological purposes, the county said in a news release. Prescribed burns are important to protect conservation lands from uncontrolled wildfires while supporting the health of Polk County’s ecosystems, the release said.
Polk County Parks and Natural Resources routinely conducts prescribed burns to maintain the health and ecological function of natural areas. All prescribed burns are subject to being postponed or canceled because of weather or other factors.
