Avelo Airlines is preparing to announce new routes out of Lakeland International Airport. Lakeland officials will hold a joint news conference with Avelo is announcing its “largest expansion” of commercial airline services at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to city spokesperson Kevin Cook.
Avelo’s first plane touched down at Lakeland International Airport on June 13, launching the first commercial airline service in more than a decade at the airport. Avelo offers flights to Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays.
Lakeland’s Airport Director Kris Hallstrand told city Commissioners things were looking pretty good after a month estimated Avelo’s outbound flights leaving Lakeland were averaging 94% full.
In a Facebook post, Avelo Airlines asked customers what new routes or destinations they would like to see added. The city’s staff reposted on the airport page with popular responses, including Atlanta; Houston; Knoxville, Tennessee; and Wilmington, North Carolina, among Avelo’s existing destinations..
