Publix Super Markets Inc. will seek Lakeland and Polk County officials’ approval for more than $365,000 in tax breaks and $500,000 in fiscal incentives to renovate the current Kentucky Avenue offices and parking garage.
Publix has filed paperwork for a county tax break and funding under the Polk County Business Incentive programs under “Project Pomelo.”
In March 2022, Publix received similar tax exemptions and incentive funds for its renovations of the former FedEx building at 333 E. Lemon St. under the codename “Project Horizon.” The grocer received a 75% tax break for 10 years on that building, starting in fiscal year 2025, and another $500,000 toward the creation of 100 jobs in that building.
On Tuesday, Polk commissioners will consider whether to give Publix an ad valorem tax exemption for 90% of all assessed property improvements to its Kentucky Avenue offices and any qualifying tangible personal property for 10 years. The tax break would start with its 2026 taxes.
If this is all approved it millions of taxpayers, why?
Publix pays plenty of tax. They should eligible just like anyone else.
