Ongoing emergency repairs to a Polk County Utilities (PCU) sanitary sewer lift station on West Campbell Road in North Lakeland just west of Jordan Heights Drive will keep West Campbell Road closed for up to two weeks. The lift station experienced an extremely high inflow of stormwater and debris during Hurricane Milton. While the lift station operated with an emergency generator, excessive stormwater, and debris volume caused two of three pumps to fail. After Hurricane Milton passed, PCU installed temporary pumps to bypass the lift station and initiate repairs.
The driveway and West Campbell Road pavement in front of the lift station was also undermined by erosion from Hurricane Milton. A crane used to place temporary pumps added further damage to the roadway. To allow for safe repairs to the lift station and restoration of the damaged pavement section, West Campbell Road remains closed from Jordan Heights Drive to Chestnut View Drive. While local residents will have access to their homesites, traffic along West Campbell Road will not be permitted to transit through the work zone. During the closure, commuters are advised to detour along Lewis Road or Kathleen Road south to Duff Road to bypass the closure. Increased congestion and moderate travel delays are expected, especially during morning and evening peak hour traffic. Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully, follow detour signs, and take extra time to trips through the area.
