One of Lakeland’s popular downtown bars has gotten the green light to expand as long as it promises to boost its security.
Lakeland commissioners voted 4-0 on Monday to approve Rec Room’s plans to expand its footprint. Mayor Bill Mutz and Commissioners Stephanie Madden and Bill Read were absent and did not vote.
The arcade bar needed the city’s approval to expand the footprint covered by its conditional use permit, as bars are allowed to operate in Downtown Lakeland only with the express approval of the City Commission.
One of the conditions of approval is that Rec Room pays for at least one off-duty Lakeland police officer to be present from on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.
