A Polk County principal is accused of “skip scanning” at a Walmart self-checkout.
The Winter Haven Police Department said officers were called to the Walmart at 7450 Cypress Gardens Boulevard in Winter Haven around 1:30 p.m. Saturday for retail theft.
An asset protection officer told Winter Haven officers that Gregory Lewis, the principal at Bok Academy North in Lake Wales, was “skip scanning” at the self-checkout. The AP officer said Lewis was seen placing a bag of disposable foam plates between items of higher value.
Officers spoke to Lewis, who admitted to skip scanning at the self-checkout, according to an arrest affidavit.
Lewis reportedly told officers that his friends told him they had stolen from stores using the same method and thought he would try it. The affidavit said Lewis had previously done this at the same store.
The affidavit said that Lewis stole a large pack of light bulbs, bacon and frozen butterfly shrimp, which totaled $37.45.
Lewis was arrested and booked into the Polk County Sheriff’s Office on a petit theft charge.

It’s an unfortunate situation, but that could’ve been thought through more intelligently especially being an educator and public figure. I assume as a principle!! His salary is between 65-80 thousand annually. So, $37 versus his annually salary lost and the embarrassment he has caused his family. Now his children and wife and other host of family members may have to dodge folks who’s aware of the principle’s unlawful decision. I know it’s detrimental to those who loves him. I’m always trying to speak from a positive perspective, and not gear so much towards the negativity. He committed a crime, got arrested, but that doesn’t succumb his leadership skills, nor loyalty to those who believes in him, however he’s got a lot of work ahead to try reconstructing the trust in his peers and others who believed in him.
