Did you know that Hillsborough County has enacted a county-wide TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return) program and their statistics reflect the progress.
From 2013 to present:
47% reduction in euthanasia over 5 years
$320,000 saved in annual shelter operations
30% decrease in shelter intake numbers
They also have an Animal Abuse Registry that has seen an 89% reduction in repeat offender cases and prevented 156 adoptions to registered abusers.
They also post their statistics for full transparency to the public taxpayers who fund the shelter, both monthly and yearly. Their statistics do not need to be “requested”. All animals transferred to other rescues/shelters are listed as such, not hidden inside the “Adoption” numbers like Polk.
Here are some comparisons for the previous fiscal year:
POLK took in 14,588 animals
Hillsborough took in 13,588 animals
POLK euthanized 1,742 dogs and 3,552 cats
Hillsborough euthanized 258 dogs and 270 cats
Hillsborough released to field 3,071 cats thru TNVR
POLK Live Release Rate was 68% dogs and 52% cats
Hillsborough Live Release Rate was 91.73% dogs and 94.56% cats
Hillsborough also offers Pet Retention Services to the public which is helping animals stay in their homes.
1,555 dog owners were offered Pet Retention Services
36 cat owners were offered Pet Retention Services
1459 dog owners accepted help and kept their animals
20 cat owners accepted help and kept their animals
Retention Services success % is 93.83% for dogs and 55.56% for cats

Animal Control needs to be moved out from under PCSO’s umbrella. Animals are not criminals but are treated as such. Contact your county commissioner. They won’t do jack, of course, unless there is an outcry of massive proportion. Good luck.
