Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Tuesday that allows certain gold and silver to be used as currency in Florida.

“We are going to utilize our authority under the Constitution in the state of Florida to make sure that gold and silver are recognized as proper legal tender. So you’re going to be able to conduct transactions in gold, conduct transactions in silver,” DeSantis said. “That means these precious metals can start functioning like real currency again, not just investment vehicles for the wealthy.”
The bill will go into effect on July 1, 2026.
