Florida lawmakers are setting sail on a new proposal to honor one of the state’s proudest historical treasures, the S.S. American Victory, a World War ll cargo ship docked in Tampa that could soon become the official state flagship.
Built in 1944, the 455-foot steamship served in World War ll, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, carrying ammunition, troops, and vital supplies to U.S. forces around the world. After decades of service, she was restored and preserved as a museum ship in Tampa, where thousands of visitors each year learn about the men and women who kept America’s wartime supplies alive.
Supporters say the designation would spotlight the ship’s role in education, tourism and patriotic outreach — and honor Florida’s long-standing bond with the armed forces.
What it does: HB 249 recognizes the American Victory as a living symbol of Florida’s maritime and military heritage. If passed, the measure would:
Honors the vessel’s service during World War II and its continued preservation as a museum ship in Tampa.
Add the designation of state flagship to Florida law
Sponsor: The bill has been filed by Republican Rep. Karen Gonzalez Pittman who said the recognition is long overdue. A Senate version has not been filed.
If approved, it would take effect July 1, 2026.
