Lakeland’s first multilane roundabout is scheduled to open next week after more than a year of construction. The Florida Department of Transportation announced on Nov. 21 that the roundabout at Waring Road and Drane Field Road will open to vehicular traffic on Nov. 24, or as soon as weather conditions allow

The Florida Department of Transportation announced on Nov. 21 that the roundabout at Waring Road and Drane Field Road will open to vehicular traffic on Nov. 24, or as soon as weather conditions allow.

The north travel lane of Waring Road will reopen to traffic next week, restoring a vital connection for residents, local businesses, and shops. The FDOT is encouraging drivers to slow down as they approach and navigate the intersection, as new traffic patterns will be in effect.

Construction of the Waring and Drane Field roundabout began in September 2024. It was incorporated into a traffic management plan when Publix Super Markets, Inc. announced plans to expand its nearby corporate headquarters in September 2018, according to Chuck Barmby, the city’s transportation and development review manager.

The roundabout was designed to have two travel lanes that will vary from 12 feet to 14 feet across with a roughly 170-foot diameter when measured from curb to curb, according to FDOT project website.

Motorists are asked to:

  • Slow down and approach the roundabout with caution.
  • Yield right-of-way to traffic already in the roundabout.
  • Follow posted signs and lane markings.

In addition to the roundabout, FDOT repaved the surface of Drane Field Road from Waring Road to Pipkin Creek Road.

  1. Hoo boy – gonna be some fender-benders. And with some Publix employees driving their $100K+ cars to work, that’s gonna smart.

    1. I am in total agreement, this is going to be a Southern fried mess enhanced with broken glass and car body parts everywhere.
