China Garden receives warning due to 10 violations during inspection

China Garden in Polk County failed a routine health inspection on Jan. 21, 2026, receiving a warning from state inspectors and requiring a follow-up visit. The Chinese restaurant at 1527 Bartow Rd accumulated 10 violations during a review conducted by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation.

What Happened During The Inspection

State records showed that the inspector documented one high-priority, four intermediate, and five basic violations at the establishment in Lakeland. The strip-mall eatery, which holds a 4.3-star rating from 410 Google reviews, serves standard Chinese dishes, including fried rice and noodles, in the Grove Park Shopping Plaza.

The high-priority violation involved nonfood-grade bags being used in direct contact with food. Health inspectors found bags of cooked chicken stored improperly in the walk-in freezer, which poses potential contamination risks.

Intermediate violations included using a handwash sink for purposes other than handwashing. Inspectors discovered a sanitizer bucket stored in the hand sink near the front counter, though staff corrected this issue immediately during the inspection.

The local Polk County restaurant also lacked written procedures for handling vomiting or diarrheal events and failed to provide proof of required state-approved employee training. All Safe Staff food handler certifications had expired, and the establishment could not show documentation that employees understood their responsibility to report health issues to management.

Basic violations centered on sanitation and safety protocols. Three employees worked without hair restraints during food preparation. Inspectors found bowls without handles being used to dispense food from containers of starches and seasonings.

The walking cooler racks showed a buildup of mold-like substance. The restaurant also failed to display its current license and lacked required choking hazard signage.

State records showed that China Garden must complete a follow-up inspection to verify corrections have been made.
