Letter: THIS IS NOT A SOLUTION

Need community service hours for Diversion Court in Polk County?

Apparently, adopting an animal from the Polk County Animal Shelter can now count toward fulfilling those hours.

Community service is supposed to be about giving back through service and accountability. Is simply adopting a pet really the same thing?

Animals deserve committed, loving homes—not to be used as a shortcut for court-ordered requirements. What happens if someone adopts a pet just to clear their hours and later decides they no longer want the responsibility?

Helping shelter animals is important, but this policy raises serious questions about whether it benefits the animals, the community, or the purpose of community service itself..

  1. Please tell me this is a joke. Who in their right mind thinks this is a good idea? Who is looking out for these animals? WTH? So they adopt an animal, then dump it on the street two weeks later to get out of their court costs and community service time. Wash their hands and move on. 🤦‍♀️

  2. Let’s see what kind of program they work up. Being responsible for a pet 24/7, learning care and responsibility of a pet has shown effective in other programs. We don’t know yet that’s its as simple as a get out of jail free cat or dog
