How One Outsider Has Turned The Tables On A Usually Quiet Florida Statewide Race

Without major PAC funding or political office, Matt The Welder has drawn hundreds of thousands of followers and unprecedented attention to Florida’s Agriculture Commissioner race.

In an election year filled with high-profile races, one of the biggest surprises has been the growing attention surrounding Florida’s race for Commissioner of Agriculture.

Matt the Welder Appearing on the ballot as Matt Taylor, his former name

The reason has a name: Matt the Welder.

Yes, that’s his legal name. (We’ll get back to that)

Appearing on the ballot as Matt Taylor, his former name, Matt has transformed what has historically been one of Florida’s lowest-profile statewide races into one of the most talked-about political contests of the election cycle

Without holding political office, without the support of a political machine and without relying on major corporate or PAC funding, Matt has built a grassroots movement that has reached hundreds of thousands of Floridians through social media, public events and direct conversations with voters. He threatens to unseat the incumbent, Wilton Simpson, in August’s Primary.

Since 2025, Matt has traveled thousands of miles across Florida. He has attended local events, met with small business owners and residents while producing videos highlighting issues that affect everyday Floridians. From protecting farmland and addressing water quality concerns to covering rapid development and government accountability, Matt has built his campaign by showing up in communities, listening to voters and bringing statewide attention to issues that many supporters believe have been overlooked.

As his campaign grew, so did the controversy.

Following Matt’s court-approved legal name change, legislation (HB 91) that he and his supporters refer to as the “Welder’s Law” sparked a legal battle over whether he would appear on the ballot. Matt has argued the legislation was aimed directly at his candidacy.

Instead of slowing the campaign, the legal fight introduced Matt to an even larger audience.

When the dust settled, Matt officially qualified.

Florida voters will see Matt Taylor on their Republican primary ballot.

Supporters say the attempt to stop his candidacy had the opposite effect. Interest in both Matt and the office of agriculture commissioner surged, drawing attention from voters who had never before followed the race or even politics in general.

Today, Matt’s campaign has become one of the most visible grassroots efforts in Florida politics. His videos routinely reach large audiences, supporters organize campaign events across the state, and volunteers continue spreading his message from the Panhandle to the Keys.

The only publicly available poll currently tracking the Republican primary on American Election HQ, an open, opt-in public poll covering races across the United States, shows Matt Taylor receiving more than 95% of more than 3,000 votes as of this writing. It highlights the extraordinary level of engagement surrounding a race that once received little public attention.

Whether viewed as a political outsider, a grassroots organizer or a challenger to Florida’s political establishment, Matt the Welder has accomplished something few candidates ever do:

He made people pay attention.

While insiders expected the agriculture commissioner race to quietly unfold in the background, it has instead become one of Florida’s most closely watched statewide contests. For many voters, that conversation begins with one candidate:

Matt the Welder.

  1. Matt Taylor aka Matt The Welder definitely has earned the right for a debate with Simpson before August before 15th.
    Matt’s getting my vote regardless.

  2. He has my vote and all of my friends and families votes He has exposed more corruption inside of the Agriculture Commission than anyone knew was going on same with the developers and them working hand in hand with Wilt Simpson along with many other things that are associated with our Senate and Gov Ron DeSantis
Can’t wait to have someone in office that’s not going to continue to lie to us and act like they are our dictators instead of our elected officials
