Meta data center water discharges suspended after contaminating the city’s reclamation water supply with bacterium — system offline for months for cleaning, closed-loop cooling system purge spread rare metal-resistant bacteria in Cheyenne’s water system

This situation highlights the growing tension between expanding tech infrastructure and local environmental safety. To clarify what happened in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the contamination did not impact the city’s drinking water system. Instead, it severely disrupted the municipal reclaimed water (reuse) supply, which is typically recycled for irrigation.

Here is exactly what went wrong and how the system is recovering:

What Happened in Cheyenne

The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities (BOPU) traced the contamination to Goat Systems LLC, a contractor working on Meta’s data center campus.

During a standard “fill-and-flush” procedure—where a closed-loop cooling system is filled with water, tested, and flushed out before being permanently sealed—the contractor discharged the flush water directly into the city’s sanitary sewer system. This water carried a rare, naturally occurring soil bacterium called Cupriavidus gilardii.

What is Cupriavidus gilardii?

It is an organism known for its extreme resistance to heavy metals. While generally harmless to the public, it can pose health risks to the elderly or immunocompromised if they come into direct contact with it.

The Operational Fallout

  • System Interruption: The bacterium successfully resisted initial treatment processes, causing massive biological interference at Cheyenne’s Crow Creek and Dry Creek water reclamation facilities.
  • Shutdown & Disinfection: Because Cheyenne uses its reclaimed wastewater to spray parks, golf courses, and green spaces, officials worried the bacteria could become an airborne hazard via irrigation. The entire reuse water network and a local retention pond had to be taken offline, drained, and thoroughly disinfected.
  • Suspension of Privileges: The city revoked the contractor’s discharge privileges on March 24, and subsequently suspended wastewater intake from all local data center fill-and-flush operations. Meta’s general contractor has since transitioned to hauling its industrial wastewater entirely offsite.

Current Status

Following months of remediation and rigorous cleaning, the situation has stabilized. Testing in late June cleared both water reclamation facilities, and Cheyenne’s reclaimed water reuse system is now officially back online. Meta noted that its independent testing found no remaining traces of the bacterium.

However, the event has intensified scrutiny over how local governments monitor the industrial purges and chemical additives (like glycol) used in massive data center cooling arrays.
