Lakeland Linder Airport Expansion: New Gates & Routes

The expansion at Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) marks a major shift, positioning it as a key alternative hub between Tampa and Orlando.

Supported by federal, state, and local funding—including a recent $4.8 million FAA grant for terminal upgrades—the airport is rolling out significant upgrades to accommodate its rapid passenger growth.

Key Expansion Plans

  • Terminal Upgrades & Gate Expansion: The immediate focus is enlarging the terminal hold room to feature expanded departure lounges, updated restrooms, and an interactive children’s play area. Long-term plans outline a five-gate terminal featuring passenger boarding bridges (jetways), expanded security, and dining amenities.
  • Runway & Airside Capacity: The airport is working on airfield improvements, including new airplane holding bays and plans for a second parallel east-west runway to significantly boost hourly flight capacity.
  • Attracting Additional Carriers: Since Avelo Airlines resumed commercial service at LAL, the airport has logged hundreds of thousands of passengers. Airport leadership is actively seeking a “market mix”—aiming to add a legacy network carrier (such as American or United) and a mid-level carrier (such as Southwest) alongside Avelo’s ultra-low-cost model.
  • New Route Goals: Targeted future destinations include hub connections like Atlanta, year-round flights to Detroit, and new service toward Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., and the Smoky Mountains region.
