The Polk County Sheriff, specifically the office led by long-time Sheriff Grady Judd, has faced serious allegations of violating First Amendment rights in separate instances.

Federal Court Ruling:
In September 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit ruled in Jarrard v. Sheriff of Polk County that Sheriff Johnny Moats and the Chief Jailer had violated the First Amendment rights of Stephen Jarrard, a volunteer minister. The court found they had unlawfully barred him from the county jail’s ministry program because they disliked his specific religious views on baptism. The court’s decision was later upheld when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case. An agreement was subsequently reached to allow Mr. Jarrard to resume his ministry at the jail.
Social Media Censorship Allegations:

More recently, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (led by Sheriff Grady Judd) has come under criticism for its social media policies and actions.
- Viewpoint Discrimination Allegations: In 2025, an investigation by Mother Jones and reports from organizations like the Knight First Amendment Institute suggested the sheriff’s office may be engaging in unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. They were accused of systematically hiding or deleting comments on platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram that were critical of how the office handled a specific rape case.
- Automatic Keyword Blocking: The reports alleged that the office used custom keyword blocking (specifically for the victim’s first name, “Taylor”) to automatically suppress a large number of comments calling for justice, creating a false impression of unified support for the office.
- Social Media Policy: The Sheriff’s Office’s official social media policy, as noted in a September 2026 case filing, has been criticized for banning “inappropriate,” “offensive,” and “trolling” comments, which legal experts and organizations like the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) argue can be used as a pretext to shut down legitimate government criticism, which is protected by the First Amendment.
In conclusion, a federal court formally determined that officials in the Polk County Sheriff’s Office violated First Amendment religious freedoms in one case. The office faces current and ongoing allegations of violating First Amendment free speech rights through its social media management practices.
I like Grady. He spoke up for immigrant workers. But he is in lockstep with lying Ron DeSanctimonius.
Grady was a decent Sheriff, but due to him refusing to have his deputies wear bodycams and his love of Flock cameras, he has lost all of my respect. He has also advised his deputies to stop people from recording interactions with his department.
I don’t agree with alot of things that happen in polk county under Gradys watch, I think they need alot more media attention to investigate and shine a bright light on all of the improprieties that occur against polk county citizens. It’s about time they were heard accountable to follow the law that they are supposedly holding up
