Today we filed a Section 1983 federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of NFL legend Warren Sapp against the City of Tampa for violation of the First Amendment.
On September 17, Mr. Sapp went to Tampa City Hall to obtain paperwork. During a public City Council meeting, city officials interrupted the proceedings, had the Council chamber doors locked, declared him “out of order,” summoned police, and directed that he be removed and trespassed from City Hall for the day. The City used its authority to retaliate against Mr. Sapp for the content of his speech and for exercising his First Amendment rights to petition his local government.
