Lakeland Approves $21.9M Police Tech Deal With Axon

The Lakeland City Commission approved a major $21.9 million, 10-year contract expansion with Axon Enterprise for the Lakeland Police Department (LPD).

The updated agreement significantly expands LPD’s access to artificial intelligence and autonomous hardware, designed to act as a “force multiplier” to cover operational gaps and address dispatch and staffing shortages.

Key Components of the $21.9M Deal

  • Drone-as-First-Responder (DFR) Program: Drones capable of automatically deploying directly to 911 call locations ahead of arriving patrol cars, supplying live video feeds to officers and dispatchers.
  • AI-Assisted Report Writing: Software integrated into body-worn cameras that transcribes audio and draft incident report summaries (requiring mandatory officer review and supervisor sign-offs before finalizing).
  • Real-Time Translation: Body camera integration capable of translating over 50 languages in real time during interactions.
  • Fusus Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC): Centralized software integrating public/private feed feeds and permission-based community camera registries.
  • 911 AI Assistance: AI workflow automation aimed at lowering dispatcher workload to mitigate burnout and high vacancy rates.
