Florida has a new drivers license motto “let us alone.”
Two years ago, DeSantis changed the highway signs greeting visitors driving in from Georgia. The new sign reads, “Welcome to the Free State of Florida.”
“Let Us Alone” is also the motto of the Florida State Guard, reactivated by DeSantis in 2023. (The civilian volunteer force of up to 200 members, explicitly under DeSantis’ command and outside federal control). The flag has been spotted at the State Capitol as part of the America 250 decorations.
It comes from a motto emblazoned on the first flag of the new state of Florida, unfurled for the first time at Gov. Moseley’s inauguration in 1845. Not everyone agreed to it at the time, according to FloridaMemory.com.
The Florida House of Representatives passed a joint resolution adopting the flag as is, but the Senate objected to the motto, which was a defiant message of Florida’s antifederalist, pro-states’ , pro-slavery rights stand. It wasn’t until December that year that a Senate resolution finally accepted it, but because the two houses approved it with different types of resolutions, the flag was never officially adopted.
