Junior Alberto Diaz scored on a header in the 19th minute to give the Florida Southern College men’s soccer its first victory of the season, in front of a full house at Moccasin Field. Southern (1-1-1) defeated the visiting Limestone Saints 1-0 on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The goal came on a set piece, as senior defender Claus Lehland took a corner kick, and sent the ball high into the box. Diaz, who was tightly marked, elevated above his defender and headed the ball straight into the back of the net.
- FSC continued to carry the pace of the match through the first half, and at intermission, the score remained 1-0.
- In the second half, Limestone picked up their attack, peppering FSC keeper Philip Faderl with 10 total shots. He stopped every shot on goal to earn his first shutout.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- For the match, Limestone took 12 total shots, including seven on frame. The resilient Faderl turned every single one, preserving the 1-0 victory.
- FSC managed seven total shots for the match, with two on target.
- For Diaz, it was the second goal of his career at Florida Southern. The first came last season, against Eckerd in October.
- Lehland picked up his first assist of the season, and his fourth in the red and white.

- On the goal scored by Diaz: “[Diaz] has put a lot of effort into getting better at set pieces, and it showed. And Lehland, with his left foot, can really put the ball just about anywhere he wants.
- On the play of Philip Faderl, specifically in the second half: There were a couple saves, I still don’t know how he really made those saves. He really stepped up big, and for the home opener, with a great crowd, that was just great to see.

Florida Southern heads to Melbourne, Fla., for a Sunday afternoon match against Auburn-Montgomery, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The game is the second of a twin billing, with host Florida Tech hosting Limestone at noon.
