Florida Southern College freshman Chris Fosdick is in a tie for third place in the Doc Gimmler men’s golf classic, being played at historic Bethpage Golf Club on Long Island, N.Y. Twelve of the 14 teams competing on the Red Course are from Division I, including the host St. John’s University Red Storm.
As a team, the Mocs rest in sixth place after Day One of the two-day event, at +17. The US Naval Academy is in first place at even par 560, followed by Rhode Island (561, +1), Yale (565, +5), Johnson & Wales (574, +14), and Lafayette (575, +15).
Fosdick shot a 2-under 68 in his first collegiate round, followed by an even-par 70, for a total of 138 strokes. He recorded eight birdies on the day, with his first round 68 being just two strokes off of the day’s best round, a 66, shot by Gustav Tegel of Johnson & Wales.
Following Fosdick was sophomore Johnny Tucker, who shot 74-71, for a +5. He made par 29 times on the day, and is tied for 22nd place. Senior Chase Ibbotson and sophomore Max Coutsolioutsos made identical 74-74 rounds, tying for 43rd place at +8. Redshirt-freshman Adam Alvarez finished the day +9, shooting 72-77.
The two-day event concludes on Sunday, September 15.
