Hi Everyone,
I’m Jiwa Farrell. I am running for a seat on our Lakeland City Commission, Northeast District B. My husband James and I have lived in our District for over ten years. All registered voters within Lakeland City voting limits may vote in my election on November 5, 2019. I’m asking for your vote and here’s why…….
Initially, I was greatly inspired by the Lakeland City Commission in 2016 when then-Mayor Wiggs granted my family and me a proclamation for Lung Cancer Awareness after we lost my sister, Felicia. Felicia’s lung cancer was secondary to her Lupus, an autoimmune disease. I became my sister’s advocate when she needed a voice and could not speak for herself.
For over a decade I represented Lakeland and Central Florida giving a voice to The Lupus Community by traveling to Washington D.C. Because of continuous efforts, working with non-aligned advocacy groups, and across party lines, demanding to be heard, the Bipartisan Congressional Lupus Caucus was formed So many issues of our time are nonpartisan, affecting any of us, at any time. This is why I want to represent you and all of Lakeland. From health care to jobs to affordable living and education, (small) business, technology and city infrastructure, issues that affect all of us. They affect our quality of life no matter who we are. I will bring my experience in the finance and insurance sectors, along with my advocacy experience to the City Commission to make sure that all voices have a seat at the City Commission table.
Let’s fight to make sure that Lakeland Electric remains owned by the people of this great city. Let’s utilize our existing infrastructure, for which we are already paying. Let’s develop broadband communication services which we will own as citizens of Lakeland. Let’s keep our historically significant architecture while rehabilitating and growing our ability to provide affordable housing to those working yet still struggling due to low wages. Let us also not forget our homeless populations, many of whom just need a fresh start while others need longer-term residential services. We can do this, you and I, all of us working together: in our schools, health care centers, food, transportation, government, utilities and cultural arts to name just a few. Join me in making it work for all of us in our wonderfully diverse city.
