Martin and Thomas Lead Mocs in Singles Play at Sailfish Invitational -

Florida Southern College men’s tennis will have a guaranteed singles champion at the Sailfish Invitational, as Chase Martin and Danny Thomas advanced to the finals of their singles flight at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center on Saturday. Martin and Thomas defeated opponents from Rollins, Saint Leo and Lynn to earn their spots in the No. 6 singles flight final, which will take place today. The invitational will conclude today with the final matches for all singles and doubles flights.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In singles flight No. 1, Brandon Pham fell in two 6-4 sets to Alejandro Ibanez of Barry and 6-2, 6-3 to Lucca Baptista of Lynn. Pham will face Keiser’s Juan Marrero today in the seventh-place match.
In singles flight No. 2, Erik Nordblom won his first set against Alejandro Ortega of Barry, 6-2, but lost in three sets after Ortega bounced back with 6-2 and 10-3 set wins. Nordblom will face Umberto Rosi of PBA in the seventh-place match after falling 7-6, 6-2 to Ghali Mensour of Saint Leo.
In singles flight No. 3, Valentin Hertweck rebounded from a 0-6 first set against Willem Van den Akker of Saint Leo to win the next two sets 6-4, 10-5. Hertweck will play in the third-place match after falling 6-0, 7-5 to Tim Buettner of Barry.
In singles flight No. 4, Brian Pham won a tightly-contested 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 match against Nicolas Cabrera of Lynn. Pham will play Mikkel Baumann of Rollins in the third-place match after falling to Martin Gutierrez of Barry, 6-1, 6-4.
In singles flight No. 5, Oscar Sohl will play in the fifth-place match after falling 6-3, 6-4 to Athanasios Bilis of Saint Leo and defeating Moritz Stenzer of Rollins in three sets (6-1, 3-6, 10-7).
In singles flight No. 6, Martin and Thomas had the best showings of any Moccasins. Martin defeated Leo Vega of Saint Leo (6-3, 6-4) and streaked past Adam Johanssen of Lynn (6-4, 6-3), while Thomas defeated two Rollins athletes in Leo Cordero (6-2, 6-4) and Freddy Danielson (6-2, 3-6, 11-9).
