In the United States there are more than 1.3 million individuals living in nursing homes and 800,000 individuals living in assisted living and residential care facilities. There are more than 4,100 nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family care homes with the capacity to serve over 192,000 residents in the state of Florida. The federal Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987, guarantees residents their individual rights in order to promote and maintain their dignity and autonomy. Individuals and groups across the nation and across Florida will celebrate Residents’ Rights Month emphasizing the importance of residents being informed about their rights and being engaged partners in achieving quality care and quality of life.
