The Florida Southern College men’s soccer team carried play for the bulk of regulation, yet dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 5 Florida Tech on Saturday night. Tech scored all three goals in the last ten minutes of the game to steal the victory. Tech remains undefeated at 8-0-1 (4-0-1 Sunshine State Conference), while Southern drops to 2-4-4 (1-2-3 SSC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Florida Southern carried play throughout the first half, but could not score. FSC took the game’s first five shots over the first 13 minutes.
- Junior James Meehan opened the attack with a shot in the second minute, which forced a save from the Tech keeper.
- Over the first 45 minutes, the Mocs outshot the Panthers 9-1 and held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
- Southern got on the scoreboard first, at the 56:29 mark. After a Panther foul, junior midfielder Edu Capote quickly put the ball back into play, passing to classmate Alberto Diaz. Diaz spun, avoided a defender, and sent the ball right to the boot of senior Eneko Lasheras, who easily beat the Tech keeper for the 1-0 lead.
- The goal woke the Panthers, who stepped up their game.
- In the 83rd minute, Tech hit pay dirt, equalizing the score at 1-1.
- Just over two minutes later, Tech took the lead for good on a set piece off a corner kick.
- Not content, the Panthers added an insurance goal three minutes later.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Lasheras now has scored two goals on the season. His first came at Nova Southeastern.
- The Mocs have faced four ranked teams so far this season, and are 0-3-1 in those games.
- FSC maintained an overall lead in shots for the game, 14-9. However, Tech had more shots on goal, 5-4.
- Graduate keeper Philip Faderl made two saves in goal for the Mocs.
