After picking up the first win of her collegiate career, Florida Southern College women’s golf sophomore Loren Perez has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, the SSC office announced on Monday. Perez, who earned medalist honors at last week’s Saint Leo Invitational, led the Moccasins to a team victory by firing an even-par 144 (73-71) to finish two strokes ahead of Tampa’s Sofia Cadavid.
After a rough start that saw Pere double-bogey on the first hole of the tournament, she was able to settle into a groove and finished with five birdies on day one to finish +1 (73) through the first 18 holes. On day two Perez recorded four more birdies, three on the front nine, to card a -1 (71). As a team, Florida Southern finished at +11 (587) to finish nine shots clear of runner-up Tampa (+20 – 596).
Perez tied for the tournament lead with nine birdies and shot -3 on par-3 holes and -1 on par-4’s. Currently, Perez ranks No. 12 among all NCAA Division II women’s golfers in the latest Golfstat individual rankings, while the Moccasins rank No. 12 as a team. In her career, Perez has now posted four top-five finishes, including three this season.
The Mocs will wrap up their fall slate when they tee off at the Rollins Legends Invitational next week. The tournament will run from Oct. 28-29 at the Country Club of Orlando.
