The Florida Southern College men’s soccer team had an opportunity to strengthen its grip on a potential Sunshine State Conference playoff berth, but let it slip away with a 3-1 loss to Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night, at Moccasin Field.
The Mocs (4-5-5, 2-3-4 SSC) entered the night in seventh place in the conference, just behind sixth place Rollins College, who also lost on Wednesday, 1-0 at Barry.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mocs played well early, as junior James Meehan scored on a pass from Taylor Vincent in the game’s third minute.
- The game’s momentum quickly shifted to the visiting Eagles (4-8-0, 3-6-0 SSC).
- The Eagles managed to tie the game at 1-1 late in the first half, in the 42nd minute.
- ERAU outshot Florida Southern 9-4 in the first half.
- Most of those Embry-Riddle shots were from distance, as Southern grad student keeper Philip Faderl made seven of his ten saves in the first half.
- In the second half, both teams had opportunities, but it was the visitors from Daytona Beach who were able to capitalize, scoring in the 67th and 84th minutes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Meehan has now scored three goals on the season, all coming in his last two games played. He previously had two markers against Eckerd, then did not play against UMary.
- The assist for Vincent was his first of the year. He also has one goal scored, against Tampa.
- For Faderl, this was the second time this season he made double digit saves. His season-high is 11, at Nova Southeastern.
UP NEXT
The final regular season match will be next Tuesday, Nov. 5, against Saint Leo. Prior to the game, around 6:30 p.m., there will be a special ceremony as we celebrate our seasoned veterans on Senior Day. Should the Mocs qualify for the SSC Championships, they would probably participate in a play-in game, on Monday, Nov. 11. That game would allegedly be a road game for Florida Southern.
