The Fire struggled in a key Sun Conference match at Coastal Georgia Wednesday night, losing in straight sets.
The Mariners (17-7) recorded digs on nearly half of SEU’s attack attempts. The Fire (17-8) had 20 attacking errors with just 23 kills for a .028 hitting percentage on the night.
Southeastern used a 5-1 run in the first set to lead 11-9, but following a CCGA timout, the Mariners went on a 12-2 run to take control of the set and win 25-19.
Coastal Georgia won 10 of the first 13 rallies in the second set, with seven points coming from kills as the Mariners hit .290 to SEU’s -.079 in a 25-13 win.
The Fire kept the third set close early on, rallying to within one at 11-10 to force a Coastal Georgia timeout. Out of the timeout, the Mariners ripped off 10 of the next 11 points to take a 21-11 lead and went on to win 25-17.
Junior Hannah Kaszubowski had a team-best six kills and added six digs. Senior Sarah Castillo recorded 20 assists and had five digs. Sophomore libero Elise Moralobo had a team-best 11 digs.
The Fire return to action on Saturday at Johnson & Wales.
