Southeastern University’s top scorers were both honored for their academic success in addition to their athletic accomplishments.
Seniors Jake Van Der Luit and Uchenna Kanu were both named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams for NAIA District 1 for men’s and women’s soccer, respectively.
Van Der Luit is in his first year as a graduate student and is the Sun Conference’s leading scorer with 20, which ranks eighth nationally. He was named The Sun Conference Player of the Year and is a three-time First-Team All-Sun Conference selection. The Chicago native has 55 career goals and 121 career points in 55 games with the Fire.
As an undergrad in Sports Management, Van Der Luit finished with a 3.3 GPA.
Kanu is a four-time First-Team All-Sun Conference selection, and has registered a total of 34 goals this season to lead the Fire. She recently became college soccer’s all-time leader in goals at a single institution with 149. The Abia, Nigeria native is the reigning United Soccer Coaches Association NAIA National Player of the Year, and is a four-time NAIA Player of the Week.
She carries a 3.3 GPA as a Sports Management major.
Both are now eligible for Academic All-America selections, which will be announced later this month.
