The Southeastern University football team had four players selected for the Academic All-District Team for NAIA District 1, voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Quarterback Cooper Jones, defensive lineman Stetson Smith, and defensive backs Cory Rahman and Chris Thompson were all selected. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a sophomore with two semesters complete at their institution, hold a 3.3 cumulative GPA, and be a starter or key reserve on their team.
Rahman is an Academic All-District selection for the second straight season, carrying a 3.5 GPA as a Sports Management major. The Orlando native is third on the team in tackles with 43, and had 3.5 for loss to go along with his two interceptions.
In his first full season as the starting quarterback, Jones has guided the Fire to an 8-1 record, setting school single-season records in passing yards (2,584), completions (168), attempts (279), and touchdowns (26). The sophomore from San Clemente, Calif. caries a 3.6 GPA as a Management major, and is also the Mid-South Conference’s leader in passing.
Thompson, a junior from D’Iberville, Miss., carries a 3.39 GPA as a Sports Management major and ranks third in the NAIA in pass breakups per game at 1.7 and has four interceptions.
Smith has two sacks among his nine tackles during his sophomore season. The Plant City native has seen action in seven of SEU’s nine games this year, and has a 3.41 GPA as a Management major.
All are now eligible for Academic All-America consideration, which will be announced in mid-December.
